Kauai is one of the oldest islands in Hawaii. It’s located in the most northern parts of the Hawaiian Islands and known for its expansive beaches, dramatic cliffs, and lush greenery. After spending two weeks in September exploring this beautiful island, I can wholeheartedly say that my top choice for an adventurous getaway is to visit Kauai.
We snorkeled with giant sea turtles and watched the biggest dolphin pod I’ve ever seen swim by. (There were over 100, by the way.) We also saw skipjack tuna chow down on a massive bait ball in the middle of the ocean. These moments left me speechless (which is rare) because of how raw and real they were – the untamed beauty and wildlife made it feel like we were in a documentary of National Geographic.
Let’s not forget about the Na Pali Coast, aka the backdrop of the famous film Jurassic Park. We spent a full day sailing this jagged coastline in a catamaran and it was surreal. From witnessing cascading waterfalls to visiting lesser-known sea caves, Kauai is a destination begging to be discovered.

For starters, Kauai is extremely accessible. It’s a short 5 hour flight from the mainland and has a completely different feel. I always say it feels like a new, exciting world stashed in your back pocket.
Compared to Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island, Kauai is one of the least visited islands. In fact, that’s what gives it its unique charm. Less crowds, better prices, and more chances for cultural immersion. To me, this island captures the essence of all the Hawaiian Islands. From the verdant fauna and flora to the cultural traditions, Kauai is the real deal for an authentic vacation.
Don’t book a trip to Hawaii without considering Kauai. I’ve been to Hawaii multiple times and visited many places in this world, and Kauai is still at the top of my list for places to visit.
Want to see what it would be like to visit Kauai? I’m here to help. Get started here.
Kauai gets a bit of a bad rap for being the “slow” island, but I think that’s exactly where its magic lies.
Specifically, it’s nicknamed The Garden Isle because of its rich biodiversity, vibrant vegetation, stunning beauty, and numerous natural attractions. Making the most of its relaxed vibe and pace is key to enjoying your trip.
Step back in time and leave the everyday hustle behind, away from the busy tourist hubs of Hawaii. You might even recognize the quintessential charm from 50 First Dates at the Hukilau Cafe. (Still one of my favorite movies, honestly.)
Ideally, a split stay between the North and South shore is the perfect way to spend time on Kauai. The North embodies a slower pace of life, while the South offers more opportunities for wining and dining. If slow mornings, outdoors, and indulgent dining experiences speak to you, Kauai is calling your name.
During my time on the North Shore, I found little reminders to slow down a bit. For instance, Jamie grabbed a coffee at Wishing Well and was met with their iconic tagline “slow yourself down.” I immediately felt myself relax my shoulders a bit – this was the pause I was needing. (Hey, are you thinking you need that same kind of pause? Learn more about our process and how we help you actually relax on your travels.)
Grab a fresh cup of coffee (or some shave ice) from Wishing Well, then walk around the charming little slice of Hanalei Town. Take a mental picture of the rugged mountain peaks and waterfalls cascading from the summit of the north shore in Princeville and Hanalei Bay that serve as a backdrop.
The 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is the best hotel in the area and one of the most beautiful properties I’ve visited. Honeymooners, you’ll love this one. From its chic, modern naturalist design to the mindboggling views of the start of the Na Pali coast across Hanalei Bay, everywhere you look is a jaw-dropping moment. The rooms are spacious, stylish and swanky. The property is lush and full of character everywhere you look. Want something a bit more low key? The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas offers hotel amenities but has a laid-back condo vibe. It’s calm, classy, and serene with all of the North Shore views and culture you’ll know and love. Friends trip anyone?

Hop back over to the South Shore for a stay in Poipu or Nawiliwili for a more upbeat portion of your stay. Tons to do in this area, like stopping to see the turtles come up to nest on the shore of Poipu beach, or setting sail for a sunset catamaran tour, or catching a wave at Shipwreck Beach.
Looking for hotel recommendations on the South Shore? The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa is a beachfront oasis that features incredible dining experiences with ocean views, gorgeous pools, and a spa. Get ready to explore vast sandy beaches with prime surf spots and tidepools perfect for families. Plus, the most epic sunsets I’ve ever seen. Other properties I would recommend next time you visit Kauai, are Timbers Kauai Ocean Club and Residences and Ko’a Kea on Poipu Beach, both conveniently located on the Southern shores of the island.

Seeing the Na Pali Coast is an absolute non-negotiable when you are visiting Kauai. Whether you choose to sail along the coast like me, or hop in a helicopter to explore from above (I recommend this one), this real life Jurassic Park moment will not disappoint.
Honestly, visiting the Na Pali coast was the absolute highlight from our entire two week trip.
We loved our catamaran tour with Makana Charters as we spent the day soaking up the sun and admiring the crystal clear waters. From darting in and out of sea caves to jumping off the boat to snorkel with sea turtles, I can’t recommend this activity enough.

Jace’s travel tip: For the best experience, book an early tour to avoid winter swells. The return ride may get rough, but if you go into it expecting a little bit of adventure, you’ll be in for a treat.

For those craving adrenaline and adventure, I highly recommend a visit to Kalalau Trail – it is one of the most surreal and breathtaking places that you will ever see. I was speechless as I witnessed the grandness of this mountain range.
Everywhere you turn, you’ll find an abundance of sand strips that grace the coastline of Kauai. My advice: beach hop and take time to explore the whole island. Drive out to Waimea Canyon to see incredible fissures. Or hop on an inner-tube to float down old irrigation ditches outside of Hanamaulu.
Most of Kauai’s beaches are not suitable for swimming (aka there are no lifeguards present at many beaches), so always exercise the utmost caution when deciding to get in the water here. Also keep in mind that the rip current and tides can shift quickly.
Kauai is like a chameleon. If you want to lounge in the sun and spend time with your loved ones, you got it. For those craving adrenaline rushes and nature walks through lush rainforests, you’ll have plenty to choose from. If you’re hoping to immerse yourself in authentic Hawaiian culture, you’ll find it at every turn.
This destination is a perfect match for anyone looking for adventures, off-the-beaten-path experiences, cultural immersions, family vacations, and romantic getaways. And the best part? There’s an abundance of luxury condo complexes and resorts alike, so you can travel in style your way.
